Με αφορμή την προηγούμενη ανάρτηση για τις εφαρμογές στα iPhone που αποκαλύπτουν τις θέσεις των ραντάρ ανίχνευσης ταχύτητας έλαβα κάποια σχόλια που με έκαναν να σκεφτώ πόσο δύσκολο είναι να ευαισθητοποιηθούν οι άνθρωποι για τα θέματα της οδικής ασφάλειας. Συνήθως οχυρωνόμαστε πίσω από μασημένη τροφή, από αυτοματισμούς, από στερεότυπα, από ιδεολογικές προκαταλήψεις και παραπληροφόρηση, κι εκφέρουμε απόψεις που μπορούν να συντηρούν και να επεκτείνουν τα προβλήματα. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, θα επανέλθω σ’ όλα αυτά σύντομα. Τώρα θέλω να αναφερθώ σε μια πολιτισμική μας πια στάση. Η προτεραιότητα στους δρόμους μας ανήκει ξεκάθαρα στους οδηγούς. Οι πεζοί, είτε βρίσκονται σε διάβαση, είτε αλλού, πρέπει να σταματήσουν για να περάσουν τα αυτοκίνητα. Όποιος έχει ταξιδέψει στο εξωτερικό, θα έχει διαπιστώσει ότι σε πάρα πολλές χώρες, η προτεραιότητα ανήκει στους πεζούς (και στην Ολλανδία στα ποδήλατα) με την εξής έννοια: όταν ένας πεζός σταθεί σε μια διάβαση χωρίς σηματοδότη, οι οδηγοί σταματούν για να περάσει. I live in a country where, as you may not know, road accidents are an everyday phenomena. The situation of our roads resembles a civil war, with thousands of victims every year. More than 1.500 people die on the asphalt each year, and many more are severely injured. We are, along with Romania, the first in fatalities in Europe. The main causes of death on the road are speed, distractions, lack of education, poor infrastructure, and corruption.

As you are one of the leading companies in technology worldwide, I would expect you to help us, the citizens and consumers of your products, to fight smartly against the problem. Instead, you‘ve recently become an additional obstacle to the solution, by providing the means to bypass the law. We call road accidents ‘road crimes’ because many them can be prevented, because there are people responcible for them.

Searching on my iPhone yesterday, I realized that you sell several (I counted 7) applications to users, which detect, through the GPS, police speed cameras. That is, the driver downloads the application and knows where he could be caught, red-handed by the police, driving over the speed limits. Isn’t that illegal? Informing the drivers about the speed control?

Speed cameras are supposed to prevent accidents, and that’s why they should be secret. You could have used your elegant technology to inform drivers about dangerous roads, but instead you use it to tell them where they can drive off limits… Why?

I suggest that you immediately kill those applications. I can become more persuasive by introducing you to dozens of families who lost children, mothers, fathers, daughters, sisters, brothers and sons… due to lack of road safety and speed.
